The Charlotte Hornets were established as an expansion team in 1988 and in their short history have undergone several name changes and upheaval. From 1988 to 2002 the team was known as the Charlotte Hornets owned by George Shinn. After Shinn relocated his franchise to New Orleans creating the New Orleans Hornets, Charlotte was left without an NBA team. Two years later a new expansion team named the Charlotte Bobcats was established. Later in 2013, the New Orleans team changed their name to the Pelicans and gave the Hornets name and official history back to Charlotte. The Hornets spent their inaugural season in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division finishing bottom. Their second season was in the Western Conference Midwest Division but the result was the same. From 1990 to 2002 they played in the Eastern Conference Central Division. They reached their first postseason in the 1992 season when they won the First Round against the Celtics but lost to the Knicks in the Conference Semifinals.
During this period they would lose three more times in the Conference Semifinals. In 1998 they went down 4-1 to the Bulls. In 2001 they were stopped 4-3 by the Milwaukee Bucks, then in 2002 they lost to the New Jersey Nets.
The team was inactive for two seasons from 2002 to 2004 as the new franchise deal was worked out. As the newly formed Charlotte Bobcats the team played in the Eastern Conference Southeast Division from 2004 to 2014. During that time the team made it to the postseason just twice, in 2010 and 2014, but lost both times. Michael Jordan made history in 2010 when he became the first former NBA player to own a franchise when he bought a majority stake. The return of the Hornets name in 2014 did not change the team’s success. Average to bad results in the regular season earned them limited playoff action.
