The Phoenix Suns started in 1968 as an expansion team along with the Milwaukee Bucks. They are in the Western Conference Pacific Division and play at the Talking Stick Resort Arena which has a capacity of 18,055. The team name came from a name-the-team competition with the young General Manager, Jerry Colangelo, making the final decision. Other entries mostly captured the wild desert nature of Arizona such as the Scorpions, Rattlers and Thunderbirds while some other suggestions like Poobahs, Dudes and Cactus Giants were just out there. The team colors are purple, orange, black, gray and yellow.

The Suns made the Playoffs just once in their first seven year, losing to the Lakers in the Division Semifinal in their second season. Changes to the lineup including Paul Westphal and Alvan Adams brought immediate unexpected success in the 1975-6 season. Despite finishing third in their Division they went on to the postseason beating the Seattle Supersonics in the Conference Semifinals. They then made it past the Golden State Warriors in the Conference Finals leading them to their first NBA Finals where they lost to the Celtics over six games. From the late 1970s to the mid 1980s they were in Playoff contention every year and twice reached the Conference Finals.

Success in qualifying for the postseason continued from the late 1980s to 2010. In the 1992-3 season they reached their second NBA Finals. After winning their division they beat the Lakers, Spurs and Supersonics en route to meeting the Bulls for the title. Over six games the Bulls proved too strong and the Suns finished second best. In the years after that there were several bright spots but they did not again progress past the Conference Finals. From 2010 the Suns suffered a prolonged postseason drought. Despite the fact that the Sun’s record overall is one of consistency and achievement even though they have not yet won a Championship.
