Utah Jazz started as New Orleans Jazz in 1974 as an expansion team, moving to Salt Lake City in 1979. They played first in the Eastern Conference Central Division and then the Western Conference Midwest Division before joining the Northwest Division in 2004. Since 1991 they have played at the Vivint Smart Home Arena which has a basketball capacity of 19,911. The team name comes from its time in New Orleans which is famous for its jazz music. Other names which were considered include Cajuns, Dukes, pilots and Deltas. After the move to Utah there wasn’t enough time to change the name before the start of the season so the Jazz name stuck. The team colors are navy, gold and green.

The seasons in New Orleans were not productive at all. The team did not qualify for the Playoffs in its five seasons there and the highest finish in the Division was 4th. The postseason drought continued after the move to Salt Lake City but amid some financial trouble the team was rebuilt and started to become competitive. From 1983 to 2003 the Jazz qualified for the Playoffs every year. By 1991 they had gone out at the Conference Semifinals four times before making it to their first Conference Finals in 1992, eventually losing to the Trail Blazers. In 1994 and 1996 they reached the Conference Finals again but were unsuccessful, going down to the Rockets then Supersonics.

The Jazz had their best period in the 1996 and 1997 seasons when they reached back-to-back NBA Finals. After winning their division both years they went through the Playoffs without too much trouble both times before losing to defending champions Chicago Bulls with the same 2-4 series outcome. Since then the Jazz have struggled somewhat to consistently make the Playoffs with a couple of short droughts.
