The Brooklyn Nets started life in the American Basketball Association as a founding member in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans playing in Teaneck, New Jersey. They had problems finding a suitable arena to play in and the next season they moved to the Long Island Arena and changed their name to the New York Nets. With two other sports teams in New York having the names Mets and Jets it was thought Nets was a suitable rhyme fitting with a theme.
In 1976 they joined the NBA in the Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. The following year they changed their name again to the New Jersey Nets, keeping it for the next 35 years. In 2013 the team moved to Brooklyn and became the Brooklyn Nets. The team colors are black and white and they currently play at the Barclays Center which has a capacity of 17,732. The Nets had their greatest successes in the American Basketball Association winning the ABA Finals in the 1973-4 season by beating the Utah Stars then winning their second title two years later by beating the Denver Nuggets. Over their first two decades in the NBA they had some postseason action but it wasn’t until the Millennium that they made it past the Conference Semifinals.
After winning their Division for the first time in 2001 they beat the Indiana Pacers in the First Round and then the Charlotte Hornets in the Conference Semifinals. In the Conference Finals they blew past rivals the Boston Celtics 4-2 but went down 4-0 to the LA Lakers in the NBA Finals. The following year they tried again. In the playoffs they had a First Round win against the Milwaukee Bucks before meeting the Celtics again and this time finishing 4-0. They repeated that in the Conference Finals against the Detroit Pistons. In the NBA Finals the San Antonio Spurs won the series 4-2 denying the Nets the title.
