The Memphis Grizzlies started in 1995 as an NBA expansion team originally located in Vancouver. The Toronto Raptors started at the same time as part of the NBA expansion into Canada. After six seasons in Canada, however, the team moved to Tennessee becoming the Memphis Grizzlies in 2001. The team played in the Western Conference Midwest Division until 2003 before moving to the Southwest Division. The FedExForum is the home arena of the Grizzlies and it has a capacity of 18,119.
The team name comes, of course, from their time in Vancouver. The original suggestion for the name was the Mounties but it was not popular with fans and the Royal Mounted Canadian Police, so a name-the-team contest was held by a local newspaper. The Ravens was another name under consideration before club officials finally chose Grizzlies. After moving to Memphis FedEx offered the team $100 million to change their name to the Express, but the idea was vetoed by the NBA. The team colors are Beale Street blue, Memphis midnight blue, steel gray and gold.
During their time in Canada the Grizzlies had a hard time and were unable to qualify for the postseason at all. After moving to Tennessee the team finally made the Playoffs in the 2003-4 season but went down to the Suns in the First Round. The following year they made it to the postseason for the second time but went out again in the First Round, this time to the Mavericks. After four seasons of not qualifying the team finally found some form and in 2011 finally made it past the First Round to the Conference Semifinals. In 2013 they achieved their best result in their history by beating the Clippers, then Oklahoma City Thunder to reach the Conference Finals but were beaten by the Spurs in four games.
