The Philadelphia 76ers started as the Syracuse Nationals in 1946 in the National Baseball League and are one of the oldest franchises in the NBA. The team moved to Philadelphia in 1963 playing in the Convention Hall before moving to The Spectrum where they stayed almost 30 years. Since 1996 they have played at the Wells Fargo Center which has one of the largest capacities of NBA teams, sharing the arena with the Philadelphia Flyers. The team colors are blue, red and white, and the name 76ers comes from the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776. The 76ers started strongly reaching the postseason every year until 1971. In their very first season they reached the NBA Finals losing 4-2 to the Minneapolis Lakers. In 1953 they lost in their second Finals appearance, again to the Lakers but the following year they won their first title beating the Fort Wayne Pistons 4-3. In the 1966-7 season they reached their fourth Finals and won their second title, this time besting the San Francisco Warriors 4-3.
The early 1970s were tough as from 1971 the team failed to make the playoffs for four successive years but it was just a temporary downturn. In 1976, ‘79 and ‘81 they made it to the Finals losing first to the Portland Trail Blazers then twice to the LA Lakers. The next year they faced the Lakers again and this time came out on top with a 4-0 series whitewash. The next decade saw some limited playoff success until a run of seven years from 1991 without a postseason appearance.
It would be the year 2000 that saw their next chance at glory when they once again faced the Lakers and lost 4-1 in the NBA Finals. Since then postseason action has been sparse with the team not progressing past the Conference Semifinals. 76ers fans love to dream of the glory days and maybe this season will be their time!
