The Portland Trail Blazers started in 1970 as an NBA expansion team playing in the Western Conference Pacific Division until 2003 and then the Northwest Division. The team has played its home games at the Moda Center since 1995 and the team colors are red, black and white. In a name-the-team contest Pioneers was the most popular but a nearby college was already using the name so a substitute had to be found. Another popular entry was Trail Blazers and it was chosen as it embodied the same spirit as Pioneers.
The team didn't start very well, not making the Playoffs at all for the first six seasons.
Things changed after the ABA-NBA merger when Portland picked up Maurice Lucas and they hired Jack Ramsay as head coach. Despite finishing second in their division in the 1976 season they made the Playoffs for the first time. Getting past the Bulls in the First Round they then beat the Nuggets in the Conference Semifinals. In the Conference Finals they swept past the Lakers in just four games to reach their first NBA Finals. They won the Championship in six games against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Over the next decade they were pretty constantly in the Playoffs but rarely made it past the First Round. In 1988 the team was sold to Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, and despite some internal strife changes were made that turned the team around. In 1990 and 1992 the Trail Blazers reached two Championship Finals but lost both, the first to the Pistons and the second to the Bulls. The next few seasons the team went out in the First Round but in 1999 and 2000 they reached back-to-back Conference Finals. Since then the team has struggled to find any consistency with mostly First Round exits and a couple of postseason droughts. In 2019 the team again reached the Conference Finals but lost in four games to the Warriors.
