The Washington Wizards were established in 1961 and have gone through several names and locations since that time. They were originally called the Chicago Packers before changing to the Chicago Zephyrs the next year. The team then moved to Maryland becoming the Baltimore Bullets. In 1973 they moved again, this time to the Washington area and were known as the Capital Bullets only to rename themselves again the following season to the Washington Bullets. Their current name finally came in 1997 as the team’s owner Abe Pollin felt the Bullets had too much of a violent image. The team plays in the Eastern Conference Southeast Division, and play their home games at the Capital One Arena which has a capacity of 20,356. The team colors are red, navy blue, silver and white. As the Packers and the Zephyrs the team didn’t do well in its first couple of seasons. While in Baltimore the team was more successful reaching several Division Semifinals in the 1960s. In 1971 they made it to their first NBA Finals but crashed out 4-0 against the Milwaukee Bucks. After the move to Washington they continued their postseason activity. In 1975 they got through to their second Finals but lost in straight games again, this time to the Golden State Warriors. Three seasons later they made it to the NBA Finals again and this time emerged victorious, beating the Seattle Supersonics. The following year they met the Supersonics again but were unable to retain the title.

Since the late 1970s the team has struggled seeing very little playoff action. Numerous coaching changes and rebuilding attempts produced poor results overall, reaching the Conference Semifinals only a handful of times over the four decades. The 2016 season was their best for a very long time when they won their Division but were stopped by the Celtics in the Conference Semifinals.
