The Atlanta Hawks have played with several names and in a variety of locations in their long history. They started as the Buffalo Bisons playing in the National Basketball League. Originally based in New York in 1946, they played for just 38 days before moving to Moline, Illinois becoming the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. After joining the NBA in 1949 they moved again in 1951 to become the Milwaukee Hawks. Four seasons later they packed their bags once more and relocated to St Louis before they found their present home in Atlanta in 1968. Their name comes from the Sauk Indian Chief Black Hawk, leader of the Black Hawk War in Illinois in 1832. The team plays at the State Farm Arena which has a capacity of 16,600 and the team’s colors are torch red, volt green and Georgia granite gray. The team had little success in its early days in the Tri-Cities area and Milwaukee. After the move to St. Louis, however, they only missed the playoffs once in thirteen seasons.  Their most productive time was between 1956 to 1961 when they reached four NBA Finals. From 1956 to 1969 the Boston Celtics were the most successful and dominant team in basketball and the Hawks would meet them four times in the Finals but winning just once in 1958, denying the Celtics a ten-season winning streak.

Since moving to Atlanta things have not been easy for the Hawks, including several periods without any postseason action. They started relatively well reaching the Division Finals in their first two years followed by three seasons in the Conference Semifinals but then came a postseason drought. Through the 1980s and ‘90s the team struggled not progressing past the Semifinals. The naughties were pacticulary bad with an eight-season playoff drought. Their best performance in recent seasons was a Division title in the 2014-15 season and a Conference Semifinal win before going down to the Cavaliers in the Conference Finals.
