The Houston Rockets started as an expansion team in 1967 originally based in San Diego. In 1971 the team relocated to Houston becoming the first NBA franchise in Texas. The Rockets are in the Western Conference Southwest Division and play their home games at the Toyota Center which has a capacity of 18,055. The team name was chosen in a name-the-team contest in San Diego where Atlas Rockets were being made. When the team moved to Texas the name fit neatly with Houston being home to a NASA space center. The team colors are red, black, gray, anthracite and white.

The team did not perform well during their four seasons in San Diego, making the Playoffs just once, they lost in the Division Semifinals to the Atlanta Hawks. After moving to Texas it took a couple of seasons for the Rockets to fly but managing to get to two Conference Semifinals and one Conference Finals by the end of the 1970s. The 1980s was a good time for the team. In 1981 they reached their first NBA Finals but went down 4-2 to the Celtics. They had another chance at the title in 1986 but once again were beaten by the Celtics over six games.

The 1990s were a golden time for the Mavericks. In 1994 and ‘95 they won back-to-back titles. For their first Championship they beat the Trail Blazers, Suns and Jazz before meeting the Knicks in the Finals and winning over seven games. In the second Championship they took on Jazz, Suns and Spurs before beating the Magic in just four games. Since the turn of the century the Mavericks have mostly qualified for the postseason with just a couple of droughts, notably 1999-2003 and 2009-2012. In 2015 and 2018 the Mavs go to the Conference Finals but were beaten both times by the Warriors.
