The San Antonio Spurs started in 1967 as the Dallas Chaparrals in the American Basketball Association. After three seasons they changed their name for one season to the Texas Chaparrals before renaming themselves Dallas again for two seasons. In 1973 they changed their name again, this time to the familiar San Antonio Spurs before joining the NBA in the ABA-NBA merger in 1976. The Spurs are in the Western Conference Southwest Division and play at the AT&T Center which has a capacity of 18,418. A name-the-team contest was held to select a different name to the Chaparrals. From over 500 entries the initial favorites were the Aztecs and Gunslingers, but the judges finally went with Spurs. The team colors are silver and black.
Over its history the team has been very successful, in the Playoffs almost every season, and is in the NBA’s top five for Championships won. For the first three decades the top title eluded the team as they were stopped in the Conference Semifinals or Finals many times. Their first Championship came in the 1998-9 season. After winning their Division they went on to beat the Timberwolves in the First Round, then 4-0 against both the Lakers in the Conference Semifinals and the Trail Blazers in the Conference Finals. In the NBA Finals they faced the Knicks and came away with the title over five games.
Four seasons later the Spurs won their second title against the Nets. Their third Championship came in 2005 after beating the Pistons in seven games. Two years later brought title number four when they smashed the Cavaliers 4-0. The 2012-13 season saw their first Finals appearance without winning as Heat took the series 4-3. The next year the Spurs took their revenge as they won their fifth Championship, beating Heat 4-1.
