The Toronto Raptors are currently the only Canadian-based team in the NBA. They were founded as an expansion team in 1995 starting in the Eastern Conference Central Division before moving to the Atlantic Division in 2004.They play at the Scotiabank Arena which has a capacity of 19,800 and the share the stadium with the NHL team Toronto Maple Leafs. The nickname Raptors was chosen in a nationwide vote following the success of Jurassic Park which was popular at the time. The team colors are red, black, silver, gold and white. The Raptors struggled in their first few seasons not making the postseason at all until 1999 when they were stopped in the First Round by the Knocks 3-0. The following year they went one better making it to the Conference Semifinals but were beaten 4-3 by the Philadelphia 76ers. 2001 saw another First Round loss and over the next ten seasons they only made it to the playoffs twice in 2006 and 2007.
After a period of rebuilding Toronto started to show some progress reaching the First Round in 2013 and again in 2014. The following year they got past the Indiana Pacers to face Miami Heat in the Conference Semifinals winning for the first time. Next up were the Cavaliers in the Conference Finals but it was a bridge too far and the Raptors went down 4-2. In the next two seasons Toronto would face the Cavaliers twice more in the Conference Semifinals, losing both times 4-0.
Their biggest success came in the 2018 season when they cruised past Orlando Magic in the First Round before edging out the 76ers in the Semifinals. They recorded their first Conference Finals win when they beat the Milwaukee Bucks 4-2 leading to their first NBA Finals appearance. The Raptors took the title after Game 6 against the Golden State Warriors for the first win of a team based outside the US.
